European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST)

European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) is an EU-funded programme which enables the creation of interdisciplinary research networks in Europe and beyond. COST has been in constant growth since its creation in 1971 and is currently supported by 41 Members and 1 Cooperating Member. Through its funding of research networks and with approximately 45.000 researchers and innovators with expertise in different fields involved in COST Actions and widespread all over the world, COST contributes to the competitiveness of the European Research Area.

What makes COST different from other funding programmes is its bottom-up approach, its flexibility, and its openness to all kinds of scientific and technological horizons: the research priorities, the investigation of new themes, the formulation of new questions and new approaches, are all defined by the research community working together, to which other stakeholders from the civil, political and industrial societies are invited to join. The selection procedure for the COST Open Call especially encourages the interdisciplinary themes. The goals of the Rencontres and the structure of the event fit in perfectly with the aim and values of COST:

  • be a place for constructive arguments between different European or international research trends;
  • explore new research perspectives thanks to the interdisciplinary dialogue;
  • testing out new ways for dialogue and cooperation between artists, economic and cultural stakeholders, and researchers;
  • consider the contribution of the creation in terms of knowledge, possible research grounds, and even new ways of experimentation.
